Smoked Gouda & Apple Grilled Cheese (Printable version)

Smoky Gouda meets crisp apple slices in this comforting grilled cheese sandwich

# What You Need:

→ Bread & Dairy

01 - 4 slices sourdough bread or country-style bread
02 - 4 oz smoked Gouda cheese, sliced
03 - 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened

→ Fruit

04 - 1 small crisp apple (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), cored and thinly sliced

→ Optional Additions

05 - 1 tsp Dijon mustard
06 - Freshly ground black pepper to taste

# Directions:

01 - Spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each bread slice. Place bread slices buttered side down on a clean work surface.
02 - If using Dijon mustard, spread it on the unbuttered side of two bread slices.
03 - Arrange half of the smoked Gouda slices on the mustard-covered or plain bread slices. Distribute apple slices evenly over the cheese, then top with remaining Gouda. Season with black pepper if desired.
04 - Top each sandwich with the remaining bread slices, buttered side facing outward to create the exterior golden crust.
05 - Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Place sandwiches in the pan and cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula, until bread turns golden brown and cheese melts completely.
06 - Remove from heat, allow to cool for 1 to 2 minutes, then slice diagonally and serve warm.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • The combination of smoky Gouda and crisp apples creates this incredible sweet and savory balance that feels fancy but takes only minutes
  • Its the perfect solution for when you want comfort food but something a little more exciting than the classic version
02 -
  • Medium low heat is crucial here because high heat will burn the bread before the cheese has a chance to melt properly
  • Let the sandwiches rest for about a minute after grilling so the cheese sets slightly and doesnt ooze out when you slice them
03 -
  • Use a cast iron skillet if you have one because it holds heat evenly and creates the most gorgeous crust
  • Place a lightweight pan or pot on top of the sandwich while the first side cooks to press everything together
